Independent Homeware Brands Gain Ground as UK Shoppers Look Beyond the Big Chains

Curated living room furniture and home decor

Independent homeware brands are winning ground with UK shoppers, as buyers look beyond the big chains for furniture and accessories with more character and staying power.

The shift has been building for several years. When people spend less often, they want what they buy to last longer and feel more considered, and smaller retailers are increasingly the ones delivering that.

Wolfe & Briar, an Ascot-based online retailer, is among the independents benefiting from the change. The brand was founded out of frustration with throwaway home products, and it now curates a range of more than 1,000 pieces from trusted UK suppliers, spanning furniture, lighting, art, mirrors and garden pieces.

The brand’s approach is deliberately selective. Rather than stocking everything, it chooses pieces for how they will wear and how they sit alongside one another, and it regularly collaborates with independent makers and designers who share its emphasis on quality.

“There is a real appetite for things with a story behind them,” a spokesperson for Wolfe & Briar said. “Customers tell us they would rather buy one beautiful piece they will keep for years than several items they will be replacing in twelve months.”

That sentiment is reflected in the retailer’s price range, which spans modest accessories at under £20 to statement outdoor furniture above £2,500. The common thread, the brand says, is curation: every piece is chosen with care, or it does not make the range.

For the wider sector, the rise of such independents represents a quiet restructuring of the homeware market. Online-first brands with strong curation and clear values are taking share from generalist retailers, and the pattern looks set to continue as shoppers become more selective about where their money goes.

The brand’s message to shoppers is simple. “Choose better where you can,” the spokesperson said. “It does not mean buying the most expensive thing in the room. It means buying the thing that was made to stay.”
