A Voice for the Great Salt Lake: The Great Salt Lake Hopeline Brings Community Voices Together in a Unique Public Art Experience

A creative storyline is an interactive project that invites people to tell their stories, share their hopes and reflect on the Great Salt Lake.

Imagine being able to pick up the phone and hear the stories of the Great Salt Lake, its past and present, as well as the hopes and dreams for the future. This vision is being brought to life by the Great Salt Lake Hopeline in conjunction with the Wake the Great Salt Lake Project of the Salt Lake City Arts Council. The project invites the public to express their memories and voices in an unprecedented way. The Great Salt Lake Hopeline is an innovative public art project that invites the community to share personal memories, stories and thoughts about the Great Salt Lake via a dedicated telephone line. This encourages a dialogue between residents, visitors and the arts council.

Participants can interact in unique ways through a phone booth that is popping up all over Salt Lake City, and the digital hotline (979 GSL-HOPE). They can record a message for the lake or listen to it’s sounds. The GSL Hopeline hopes to encourage action and connection by amplifying voices that love and treasure the lake.

Nick Carpenter, the co-creator and creator of Hopeline said: “We wanted to create an environment where people could engage with the Lake in a meaningful and personal way.” This project aims to foster a relationship between the Great Salt Lake and its people, whether you are sharing childhood memories, expressing your hope for the future of the lake, or listening to others’ voices.

Project has begun collecting a variety of messages from the heart, ranging from memories of childhood at the lake and reflections about its significance. The GSL Hopeline has also launched a podcast in addition to interactive phone booths to spread the messages collected. The first episode of the podcast is available on Spotify, Apple iTunes, and Soundcloud.

Andrew Shaw, Wake the Great Salt Lake lead program at the Salt Lake City Arts Council emphasized the importance of the Great Salt Lake Hopeline being present in unexpected public places. This project is unique because it meets people right where they are. The pink phone booth is a focal point at any event or gathering. It draws people in and creates a shared, intimate experience. “It’s a new and humane way of engaging with environmental activism and art.”

GSL Hopeline is hosting a public event from 6-9pm, Monday, March 24 at Fisher Brewing 320 West 800-South, Salt Lake City. The “sip-and-share” event will allow attendees to interact with the booth and experience new ways of listening to others’ calls. They can also meet other Great Salt Lake advocacy and art groups. GSL Hopeline is accepting requests to take the booth to public events. You never know when the pink telephone booth will appear in Salt Lake City.

Great Salt Lake Hopeline Great Salt Lake Hopeline invites people to engage with the Great Salt Lake through an interactive audio project. Callers can connect by leaving a message of hope or hearing sound from the shores of Great Salt Lake, as well as listening to voicemails left previously. The GSL Hopeline Phone Booth will be available at various events in Salt Lake City. Callers may also engage by calling (979) GSL HOPE. The voicemails will be used to create a short film and podcast, amplifying the voices of community members and sparking a dialogue on Great Salt Lake preservation.

Wake up the Great Salt Lake The Wake the Great Salt Lake project is a temporary art installation that seeks to inspire and educate residents to prevent further degradation of the Great Salt Lake. This project was created as a collaboration between the Salt Lake City Arts Council and the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office. It also received support from Kem and Carolyn Gardner of Zions Bank and the Marcia and John Price Family Foundation.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies public art challenge: Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge brings mayors, artists, and residents together to create temporary public art that addresses important civic issues within their community. Bloomberg Philanthropies asked mayors from U.S. towns with at least 30,000 people to submit applications for funding of up to one million dollars in 2022 to develop temporary public art that addresses important civic issues, and demonstrates an ability to foster public-private partnerships, celebrate creativity, urban identity and strengthen local economies. Over 150 U.S. cities applied. Bloomberg Philanthropies chose eight cities that would develop projects focusing on climate change, equity issues, food security, gun violence and homelessness as well as public health. The Bloomberg Philanthropies public art challenge has generated more than $100,000,000 in economic benefits and brought about action on a variety of civic issues since its launch in 2014.
