Years ago people grew their own food. However, as time went on, people began buying their foods rather than growing them. While it definitely saves you a lot of time and effort, you do end up compromising on the quality of food that you consume.

This is why more and more people are considering growing the food they consume. While store-bought vegetables are convenient, they come with their own drawbacks. You have no idea where they have been grown for starters. These foods also are grown in big farms where often harmful additives and pesticides are used to ripen them earlier than usual.

You will also need to consider soil depletion. Soil needs to be rich in some key nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, copper, potassium, and zinc. If the soil is low in these nutrients, the resultant food will also be low in these minerals and the vitamins that you do consume will not get absorbed appropriately.

You also cannot ignore the problems that occur during storage. Once it is harvested, the food is transported and then sold at your nearest supermarket. Even after buying it, you may be keeping these foods in your refrigerator for a couple of days. These surely leads to a loss of freshness in the vegetables and it also depletes its nutrients. For example, potatoes lose 50% of their vitamin C content within two months of being harvested. The more you store it, the the more loss of vitamin is seen.

If you want to increase your vitamin Bs and Cs, then you should grow your own vegetables. You can even think about growing many of the health foods that are sold in the market these days such as barley grass. Barley grass juice increases your concentration and increases your energy. If you grow it yourself and juice it soon after harvesting, you will be consuming more vitamins than in store-bought form.

You may even consider growing algae such as spirulina and chlorella. These algae are rich sources of vitamins and people often consume them in the form of supplements. However, the only problem with these algae is that you need to grow them in controlled conditions. If you don't, you will end up with algae not fit for human consumption. So, if you can't manage to control these conditions, you would be better off sticking to consuming these very nutritious algae in supplement form.
Author Resource:- Lack of vitamins can cause you to feel tired and fall sick frequently. The best thing to do here is to increase the consumption of B vitamins and others by eating home-grown food.
